Proclamation
"Diabetes Month"
November 2004

"Diabetes Day"
November 14, 2004

WHEREAS: diabetes is a serious condition and a leading cause of death by disease that has reached epidemic proportions, affecting six percent of Ontario’s population and more than two million Canadians.
This year, the Canadian Diabetes Association, founded by Dr. Charles Best in 1954, is celebrating 51 years of improving the quality of life for people affected by this disease through research, education, service and advocacy.
November 14, 2004 has been designated as “Diabetes Day” to recognize and celebrate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, one of Canada’s true heroes, who together with his colleague at the University of Toronto, Dr. Charles Best, discovered insulin.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim November 2004 as "Diabetes Month" and November 14, 2004 as "Diabetes Day" and encourage everyone to increase their awareness of this disease and the potential that exists to prevent its occurrence and reduce its complications.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
