 "Down Syndrome Awareness Week" November 1 - 7, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder resulting in an extra 21st chromosome that causes delays and limitations in physical and intellectual development. In the general population, the incidence of Down syndrome is one in every 700 births and is not related to race, religion or socio-economic status. |
|
In March 1985, parents created the Down Syndrome Association of Toronto, a charitable, non-profit organization that provides a social and information network through the publication of a newsletter and also distributes information kits and handles media relations. |
|
With such a wide variation in mental abilities, behaviour and physical development, the Association deals with issues concerning education, employment and independent living and pursues civil and human rights, equal opportunity and full integration into society for people with Down syndrome. |
|
Walkers and hikers are often tourists who are visiting new areas and neighbourhoods in our large and diverse City, while contributing to local economies and adding to the social development of our communities. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller on behalf of the residents of Toronto do hereby proclaim November 1-7, 2004 as "Down Syndrome Awareness Week" and encourage everyone to participate in events and activities that are taking place to raise awareness and increase understanding of people with Down syndrome. |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
