Proclamation
"Fair Trade Weeks"

May 1 - 15, 2004

WHEREAS: Fair Trade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development to create opportunities and better trading conditions for producers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalized; and
WHEREAS: Fair Trade organizations support fair pay for producers, raise awareness of the importance of safe and healthy working conditions for workers where they are treated with dignity and respect and women and men receive equal pay for equal work; and
WHEREAS: the Fair Trade movement in Canada has reached an important stage in its history where public interest and demand for Fair Trade products have increased considerably during the last decade; and
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 1 - 15, 2004 as "Fair Trade Weeks" to recognize the groups and individuals who work towards making a difference in many lives, and respecting the dignity of all workers globally and locally, who produce the products we purchase.
