|
 "Fanconi Anemia Awareness Day"
May 16, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
Fanconi anemia (FA) is a potentially fatal, inherited disease found in all ethnic groups, which leads to bone marrow failure, cancers and is often associated with congenital anomalies; and |
| WHEREAS: |
there is no cure for FA and the only effective treatment for its haematological symptoms is an extremely risky bone marrow transplant; and |
| WHEREAS: |
research into FA has not only enabled many children to survive into adulthood, but has increased our understanding of DNA repair, leukemia and other cancers and birth defects; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Canadian Fanconi Anemia Research Fund provides support to affected families and funds advanced medical research in finding a cure for FA, including at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2004 as "Fanconi Anemia Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto. I commend the hard work and commitment of the Canadian Fanconi Anemia Research Fund Foundation, and encourage all residents to support this very worthy cause. |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
