"Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day" September 9, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
children are our most important and precious resource and it is our responsibility to care for, nurture and protect them. |
|
Statistics indicate that individuals with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Effects (FAS/E) in Canada and countries around the world, face the risk of mental or learning disabilities, early school drop-out, homelessness, addiction, trouble with the law and mental illness. |
|
To reduce the incidence of FAS/E, it is essential that support and information on the harmful effects of alcohol is provided to pregnant women. In an effort to increase awareness, parents, professionals and individuals living with FAS/E will join people in Canada and around the world on September 9, 2004, to observe FAS Awareness Day with a Minute of Reflection at 9:09 a.m. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim September 9, 2004 as "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day" and encourage everyone to act with compassion and understanding towards individuals whose lives were affected by alcohol before they were born. |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
