Proclamation
"Freedom to Read Week"

February 22 - 28, 2004

WHEREAS: the freedom to read is the essence of free inquiry, essential to democratic decision-making and it is under assault in our society; and
WHEREAS: the freedom to read is guaranteed to everyone in our country by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and it is our responsibility as individuals and organizations to ensure that this freedom is preserved and maintained in our city; and
WHEREAS: to increase public awareness of the right to intellectual freedom, the Toronto Public Library is planning a variety of special events to celebrate Freedom to Read Week.
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 22-28, 2004 as "Freedom to Read Week" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to use the Toronto Public Library this week and through the year.
