City of Toronto Proclamation |
| |
 "Gingivitis Week"
June 7 - 13, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
seventy-five percent of Canadians have gingivitis, a gum disease at its earliest stages, yet less than six per cent know they have it; and
| WHEREAS: |
gingivitis is easily treatable and preventable. Plaque buildup, stress, hormonal changes, nutrition, gender and systemic diseases such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, heart disease and anemia, may all contribute to gingivitis; and
| WHEREAS: |
signs of gingivitis can include plaque accumulation and red, bleeding or swollen gums. If left untreated it can lead to serious periodontal disease and even tooth loss; and
| WHEREAS: |
ninety-six per cent of Canadian would like to know if they have gingivitis and fifty-six per cent said they would change their habits based on this knowledge, so increased awareness of the condition and how to prevent and treat it is vital to its eradication and treatment.
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 7-13, 2004 as "Gingivitis Week" in the City of Toronto.
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
