 "Hiroshima Day" August 6, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were devastated by two atomic bombs, resulting in a tragic loss of life and a lifetime of physical and emotional suffering for the survivors. |
|
We commemorate Hiroshima Day annually on August 6th with a ceremony in the Peace Garden at Nathan Phillips Square where the symbols of solidarity - the eternal flame from Hiroshima and the water from a river in Nagasaki represent our commitment to peace. |
|
Today we join with others here and around the world to remember an extraordinary human disaster that must reinforce in us all the will to create a society that will encourage and uphold humanity's belief in peace and strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council do hereby proclaim August 6, 2004 as "Hiroshima Day" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to participate in the activities planned to recognize this as a day for the abolition of nuclear weapons. |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
