 "Hope for Schizophrenia Day"
June 13, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
the annual Walk Of Hope is The Schizophrenia Society of Ontario's single-largest fundraiser and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help the Society with its critical work in support of Toronto families living and coping with this debilitating and persistent illness; and |
| WHEREAS: |
schizophrenia strikes people in their late teens and early adulthood and this much-misunderstood illness is a disease of the brain that impairs a person's ability to think logically and control emotional responses; and |
| WHEREAS: |
people with untreated schizophrenia can appear to behave strangely in public, they have difficulty associating with others and relationships with family, friends and colleagues can become strained or even broken; and |
| WHEREAS: |
schizophrenia is treatable and with breakthroughs in scientific research, people suffering from this illness can lead productive lives, families can be helped to cope and relationships can be repaired. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 13, 2004 as "Hope for Schizophrenia Day" to increase awareness of this illness, and encourage everyone to support this very worthy cause. |
