"International Day of People with Disabilities" December 3, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
in 1992, the United Nations proclaimed December 3 as a day to reinforce the commitment to improve the integration of persons with disabilities who are often forced into poverty, unemployment and social isolation. |
|
The City of Toronto, in collaboration with organizations of people with disabilities and the public and private sectors, is committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities can exercise their civil, political, social and cultural rights on an equal basis with other people. |
|
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that every person with a disability has the right to a life without physical and attitudinal barriers and to live with dignity and respect. |
|
Toronto City Council has adopted an Accessibility Plan to meet its obligations under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act by establishing a foundation that supports and strengthens the City's commitment and efforts to achieve a barrier free city by enhancing accessibility to its programs, services, employment and facilities. |
|
The City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and or social-economic status. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2004 as "International Day of People with Disabilities". |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
