 "International Women's Day"
March 8, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
in 1975, the United Nations proclaimed March 8 as International Women's Day, to commemorate the deaths of 145 mostly poor immigrant women who were killed in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City on March 25, 1911; and |
| WHEREAS: |
International Women's Day is observed around the world and provides an opportunity to recognize and reflect on the progress made to advance women's equality, to take stock of the challenges facing women today, and celebrate the gains made by women in our society; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of good health, safety, dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim March 8, 2004 as "International Women's Day", to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women and the contribution they make to the success and vitality of the City of Toronto. |
