"Landmine Awareness Week"
March 1 - 7, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
March 1st marks the fifth anniversary of the International Treaty to Ban Landmines, a treaty that has been signed by 150 countries around the world, including Canada; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the Canadian Landmine Foundation and the Youth Mine Action Ambassador Program, together with their partners, work to create awareness and raise funds to eradicate the global humanitarian crisis of landmines which affect millions of people worldwide; and |
| WHEREAS: |
anti-personnel landmines continue to cause social, health and economic suffering and cannot distinguish between civilian and soldier. These weapons kill and maim tens of thousands each year and restrict access to basic human needs such as land, schools, medical facilities and fresh water; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto joins with other communities around the world to promote awareness of the landmine crisis and how the use of anti-personnel landmines violate the human rights of all people; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Canada is a leader in the effort to ban landmines, and must do its utmost to ensure that the world is striving to be mine-free and provide assistance in mine removal and care to landmine survivors. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim March 1-7, 2004 as "Landmine Awareness Week" to recognize the tireless efforts of individuals, volunteers and peacekeepers around the world, and encourage everyone to become involved with these worthwhile organizations. |
