Proclamation
"MAD Pride Day"

July 14, 2004

WHEREAS: mental health affects men and women from all countries, societies and age groups at some time during their lives; and
WHEREAS: emotional trauma is a profound human fear that has an economic impact on societies and on the quality of life of individuals and families; and
WHEREAS: organizations, community agencies and individuals are committed to raising public awareness through education and support services and in the fight against discrimination and injustice for human rights, in order to empower and improve the quality of life for psychiatric and consumer survivors who have been marginalized and disadvantaged by main street society; and
WHEREAS: we must all be committed to the values of acceptance, self determination, respect of individuality and strongly believe in the intrinsic worth and dignity of every human being.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim July 14, 2004 as "MAD Pride Day" in the City of Toronto, and encourage everyone to support psychiatric and consumer survivors in their struggle for equal rights.
