Proclamation
"Martin Luther King Jr. Day"

January 19, 2004

WHEREAS: Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. committed his life to promoting justice and equality and to ending the injustice of racism through non-violent social change; and
WHEREAS: Dr. King strengthened a civil rights movement that had a goal of creating a society which embraced differences among people, awakened people around the world to a vision of acceptance not intolerance, and that his effort reminds us that continued change is the responsibility of every member of our society; and
WHEREAS: the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to establish a caring, compassionate society based on the inherent dignity of all its members by taking a leadership role aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and by recognizing that a fundamental strength of our community is based on the diversity among us; and
WHEREAS: the residents of Toronto honour Dr. King's memory each year with a day of remembrance in January, to reaffirm our commitment to the basic principles of equality and justice.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council and the 2.5 million people of our great City, do hereby proclaim January 19, 2004 as "Martin Luther King Jr. Day" in the City of Toronto.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
