 "National Access Awareness Week"
May 31 - June 6, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
an estimated 17% of Toronto's 2.5 million residents have some form of disability, and as the development of some form of disability increases with age, there is a need for greater awareness, understanding and recognition of their needs, capabilities and potential; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the daily lives of people with disabilities are adversely affected by the barriers that exist in the environment, in employment, public transportation, housing, recreation and communication; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are committed to becoming a barrier-free and accessible City, and facilitating the full and meaningful participation of people with disabilities in civic life, and ensuring that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 31 - June 6, 2004 as "National Access Awareness Week" and encourage everyone to support equality of access, opportunity and outcomes for persons with disabilities. |
