Proclamation
"Neighbourhoods First Day:
A Celebration of Neighbourhood Centres"

June 22, 2004

WHEREAS: Toronto is a city of diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods. It is the collective energy and enthusiasm of people in communities, working together that make our city an inclusive, equitable and safe and caring place to live, work and play; and
WHEREAS: Neighbourhood Centres mobilize skilled staff and volunteers to shape locally-directed services and community education initiatives for all residents, with particular attention to the needs of vulnerable and marginalized community members; and
WHEREAS: Neighbourhood Centres are important partners that work collaboratively with the City of Toronto to advance its social development, equity and access, health promotion and anti-discrimination objectives; and
WHEREAS: the social support and connections fostered through Neighbourhood Centres are building blocks of our civil society. They provide foundations for mutual support, social cohesion and civic engagement in our democratic processes.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 22, 2004 as "Neighbourhoods First Day: A Celebration of Neighbourhood Centres" to recognize the invaluable contributions Neighbourhood Centres make to the life of our City.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
