Proclamation
"Oncology Nurses Day"

April 20, 2004

WHEREAS: oncology nurses are committed to providing quality oncology care for individuals with cancer and their families and provide this care in a wide variety of health care settings including hospitals, clinics, emergency, operating and recovery rooms, intensive care units and homes; and
WHEREAS: oncology nurses influence the quality of life for those with cancer and those at risk for cancer. They are specialists requiring advanced knowledge, technical skills and clinical judgement in their ability to care competently and safely; and
WHEREAS: oncology nurses have demonstrated excellence in patient care, research, administration and education. They practice in congruence with standards of care and work in collaboration with other professionals on the health care team; and
WHEREAS: oncology nurses strive to educate the public about prevention and screening, the treatment aspects of cancer, supportive and palliative care. They develop and teach specialized oncology education programs to their peers in Universities and Colleges and the general public.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim April 20, 2004 as "Oncology Nurses Day" in the City of Toronto, and encourage all residents to participate in activities that recognize the special contributions made by oncology nurses.
