| |
|
 "Public Access Defibrillation Awareness Week"
May 23 - 30, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
in 1998, Toronto was declared a Cardiac Safe City, and Toronto Emergency Medical Services created a program to implement public access defibrillation programs in city and private buildings; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
public access defibrillation holds promise to be the single greatest advance in the treatment of cardiac arrest since the development of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); and
|
| WHEREAS: |
the time between cardiac arrest and the performance of defibrillation is the major determinant for the success of a rescue attempt; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
for public access defibrillation to be effective, a lifesaving shock must be delivered within four minutes from collapse to achieve the highest survival rates.
|
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 23 - 30, 2004 as "Public Access Defibrillation Awareness Week" in recognition of the importance of community access to defibrillation programs. I encourage members of our community to learn more about the benefits of early defibrillation and to establish public access defibrillation programs in their workplaces, recreational facilities and multi-unit residences.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
