Proclamation
"Public Library Week"
October 18 - 24, 2004

WHEREAS: Toronto Public Library improves the quality of life for residents in the City of Toronto and provides an essential service to the community by supplying access to information of all kinds.
Books and culture are Toronto residents' first priority for the Library, and Toronto Public Library focuses on building collections that reflect the diversity of interests, cultures and languages in the city.
The gap between low and high-income neighbourhoods is increasing and the Library is committed to provide service that meets the needs of at risk neighbourhoods.
Half of Torontonians are born abroad and eight in ten immigrants have neither English nor French as their mother tongue. The Library endeavours to contribute to the successful adaptation of newcomers to Toronto.
Youth face ongoing challenges in education, the workplace and on the streets. The Library works to make young people feel welcome and to meet their needs.
The 2004 Public Library Week programs are highlighted in What's On, the program and service guide for Toronto Public Library.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller on behalf of the residents of Toronto do hereby proclaim October 18 - 24, 2004 as "Public Library Week" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to use Toronto Public Library during this week and throughout the year.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
