Proclamation
"Reach for the Rainbow Week"

June 6 - 12, 2004

WHEREAS: Reach for the Rainbow strives to create integrated recreational opportunities that enrich the lives of children and young adults with disabilities, their families and their communities; and
WHEREAS: by planning successful experiences and training 1:1 support staff to meet individuals needs, providing wheelchair accessible transportation and the loan of special equipment, Reach for the Rainbow makes integration a reality; and
WHEREAS: integration provides a sense of belonging, teaches acceptance of self and others, improves self-esteem and presents an opportunity for children and young adults with disabilities to express their uniqueness and share their talents; and
WHEREAS: integrated opportunities in valued settings provide healthy respite for families. Respite strengthens families caring for individuals with disabilities at home, and creates a positive impact on their quality of life.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 6-12, 2004 as "Reach for the Rainbow Week", to recognize the importance of integration and the valuable contribution Reach for the Rainbow and its many partners make by creating a city where everyone belongs.
