"Refugee Rights Awareness Week"
March 29 - April 4, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and is home to immigrants and refugees from around the world; and |
| WHEREAS: |
on April 4th, 1985, the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling in the Singh case, recognized the right of refugee claimants under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to an oral hearing; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy; language and/or socio-economic status and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council is committed to supporting the settlement and integration of refugees and immigrants into all aspects of community life, and will continue its efforts to strengthen partnerships with the Federal and Provincial governments and community organizations, as well as the public and private sectors, to honour and protect the rights of all refugees and immigrants. |

I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim March 29 - April 4, 2004 as "Refugee Rights Awareness Day". |
