Proclamation
"Repetitive Strain Injury Awareness Day"

February 29, 2004

WHEREAS: Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an umbrella term for a number of overuse injuries affecting the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and nerves) of the neck, upper and lower back, chest, shoulders, arms and hands, and is caused by a variety of factors including repetition, force and awkward or static postures; and
WHEREAS: RSI is a significant occupational health concern. Statistics Canada estimates that nearly 2.3 million Canadians suffer from these disabling injuries and the numbers continue to rise; and
WHEREAS: despite its increasing prevalence, RSI is poorly understood by workers, employers and the medical profession; and
WHEREAS: early intervention is the key to preventing these injuries, which typically begin as aches and pains progressing to permanent disorders which prevent those who suffer with RSI from working or leading normal lives.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 29, 2004 as "Repetitive Strain Injury Awareness Day" in the City of Toronto, to encourage everyone to increase their awareness, and to promote understanding and acceptance for those who suffer with RSI.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
