 "South Asian Heritage Month"
May 2004
| WHEREAS: |
on December 14th, 2001, with the enactment of Bill 98, the Government of Ontario proclaimed the month of May as South Asian Heritage Month and May 5th to be South Asian Arrival Day with the earliest recorded arrival occurring on May 5, 1838;and |
| WHEREAS: |
emigrants from South Asia constitute the largest source of immigration to Toronto; and |
| WHEREAS: |
South Asian Heritage Month is a time to pay tribute to the accomplishments of people of South Asian descent and the members of the South Asian community who continue to contribute to the social, cultural, economic and political life of our City; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto have been in the forefront of efforts to recognize that our society's fundamental strength lies in its unique racial and ethno-cultural diversity and have committed themselves to the elimination of racism and all forms of discrimination; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, same sex partnership, gender identity, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status. |

| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 2004 as "South Asian Heritage Month" in the City of Toronto. |
