Proclamation
"Tommy Douglas Day"
October 20, 2004

WHEREAS: Tommy Douglas spent 42 years in elected office, advocating the rights of the disadvantaged and fighting for social equality.
Tommy Douglas was responsible for creating our most cherished social programme and is widely recognized as the father of Medicare.
Tommy Douglas’ tremendous contribution to Canadian political life led beyond the creation of Medicare to our old age pension system and to unemployment insurance.
On the 100th anniversary of his birth, Tommy Douglas’ legacy continues to motivate us, and his words “Courage, my friends, it’s not too late to make a better world” serve as inspiration to all Canadians.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 20, 2004 as "Tommy Douglas Day" in the City of Toronto, to recognize and celebrate a true Canadian hero.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
