City of Toronto Proclamation |

 "Trees Across Toronto Day"
May 1, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
this day marks the first annual Trees Across Toronto Day to celebrate Toronto's urban forest by organizing public tree planting across the city. Toronto has enjoyed a reputation as a City of Trees, with over six million trees on private and public property; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
our trees are becoming increasingly threatened. Toronto's tree canopy is steadily decreasing as a result of intensification and urban sprawl, as well as predators such as the Asian Longhorned Beetle and the Emerald Ash Borer; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
like all living things, trees need to be nurtured. To strengthen and sustain Toronto's urban forest, we need to plant many more new trees that will lead to a new generation of trees and contribute to a beautiful and healthy city; and
|
| WHEREAS: |
to replenish its tree canopy, the City of Toronto has developed a city-wide initiative called "Trees Across Toronto" where residents can leave a legacy of trees for future generations, as previous generations have done for us, and plant a tree at one of six designated sites across the city or on their own property.
|
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 1, 2004 as "Trees Across Toronto Day" and encourage everyone to plant a tree to help make Toronto's urban forest bigger - and greener - one tree at a time.
|
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
