"UMOVE Day of Non-Violence"
October 21, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
UMOVE (United Mothers Opposing Violence Everywhere) was formed by a group of mothers who have each lost a child to a senseless act of violence, along with supporting members from the community. |
|
The issue of non-violence embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples and remains humanity’s guiding inspiration. We believe that if all communities respect one another and unite in peace, we can eliminate the violence that has taken hold of our communities as manifested in different forms i.e. gun violence, domestic violence, violence against children and youth and racial violence. |
|
Government has an obligation to prevent, investigate and punish acts of violence and provide protection for victims. As individuals we all have an obligation to change attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate the violence, and the City supports the development of strategies towards violence prevention and the enhancement of programs and services with a commitment to take a leadership role to end all forms of violence. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 21, 2004 as "UMOVE Day of Non-Violence" in the City of Toronto and encourage everyone to establish a day of non-violence in our homes and communities. |
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
