Proclamation
"Volunteer Week"

April 18 - 24, 2004

WHEREAS: much of Toronto's strength, beauty and unique character is derived from the outstanding contributions made by thousands of residents who volunteer in every facet of everyday lives, and play a vital role in many organizations and groups; and
WHEREAS: volunteers of all ages, from all walks of life and economic and cultural backgrounds, give generously of their talent, spirit, energy and the most important, their gift of time, to assist individuals and families in the community; and
WHEREAS: volunteers fulfil an endless range of duties. They contribute their time to read to the blind, visit the elderly and the sick, provide transportation to the disabled, deliver meals-on-wheels and provide a multitude of other services and activities that help make a difference in many lives; and
WHEREAS: the Volunteer Centre of Toronto enables and encourages residents of all ages to serve the community, and assists organizations and agencies to work effectively with volunteers.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim April 18 - 24, 2004 as "Volunteer Week" to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by thousands of volunteers who are the "heart and soul" of our city, and to recognize the hard work and commitment of staff at the Volunteer Centre of Toronto.
