"World Food Day" October 19, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
Oxfam Canada, a non-profit international development organization, is holding a traditional Ethiopian dinner and coffee ceremony at the St. Lawrence Hall to celebrate World Food Day, which has been an annual event since 1981 and is now recognized in 150 countries as a day to raise public awareness for global food issues. |
|
With over 35 countries currently facing serious food emergencies requiring international assistance, tonight’s event will uncover some of the complexities of delivering food aid effectively and the importance of balancing a community’s immediate needs with long-term sustainability. |
|
A significant amount of work is being done in Toronto to address the issue of food emergencies and to educate the public about the causes, effects and potential solutions to the problem in both local and international contexts. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 19, 2004 as "World Food Day" to acknowledge and thank Oxfam Canada and many other groups and individuals for their commitment to reduce food insecurity in their communities and around the world.
|
[Signed Mayor David Miller]
