"World Refugee Day"
June 20, 2004
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and is home to immigrants and refugees from around the world; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council and the people of Toronto are in the forefront of efforts to ensure that everyone has the right to live in conditions of dignity, respect and peace. and on December 4, 2000 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution naming June 20 World Refugee Day to affirm the values and collective efforts of all concerned groups for refugee protection; and |
| WHEREAS: |
the City of Toronto continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage, and is committed to equal treatment of all people regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, disability, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, same sex partnership, age, marital status, family status, immigrant status, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, religious affiliation, record of offences, level of literacy, language and/or socio-economic status; and |
| WHEREAS: |
Toronto City Council respects the resilience of refugees, and all individuals and groups that help to restore meaning to the lives of refugees, and recognizes that the many residents of Toronto are living proof of the contributions refugees make to our society. |
| NOW, |
| THEREFORE: |
I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim June 20, 2004 as "World Refugee Day". |
