Proclamation
"World Sight Day"
October 14, 2004

WHEREAS: eyesight-related organizations throughout Canada are joining forces to draw attention to the significant issue of global blindness.
In Canada, one in nine people will develop irreversible vision loss by age 65 and by age 75, the number is one in four. Every five seconds, one person goes blind in the world.
Through treatment and prevention, 80 per cent of blindness is avoidable and there is a new initiative and global partnership to raise awareness, mobilize resources and develop national blindness prevention programs to avoid an additional 100 million people from being blind by 2020.
NOW,
THEREFORE: I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 14, 2004 as "World Sight Day" in the City of Toronto and acknowledge the world’s efforts to prevent the rise of this disease and encourage everyone to participate in raising awareness of blindness.

[Signed Mayor David Miller]
