City of Toronto Proclamation
Bike Week
May 29 - June 11, 2006

WHEREAS Toronto is committed to a bicycle-friendly future for our City's 939,000 cyclists. While it is important to promote cycling in general, there is a specific need to encourage more bicycle commuting. Promotion needs to begin by changing attitudes, reinforcing that bicycle commuting can be both practical and enjoyable.

Since the mid-1970s, Toronto has engaged in a comprehensive program to improve the state of cycling in the City and in 1988, launched Bike to Work Day to get commuters out of gridlock and on to their bicycles.

Momentum from projects such as Bike Week and other cycling related initiatives work to promote bicycle commuting as a popular alternative to the automobile.

Toronto has a thriving bicycle culture with over 70 community partners who support Bike Week 2006 and other cycling programs through their grassroots efforts and commitment to making Toronto a more healthy and livable, bicycle friendly city.

The City of Toronto recognizes the need for clean, cost-effective transportation and supports the Toronto Cycling Committee in its endeavours.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 29 - June 11, 2006 as "Bike Week" and encourage everyone to get outside and ride!

Mayor David Miller
