Employment and Social Services has issued additional funds, as a Special Diet, to assist with the nutritional requirements of pre and postnatal care.
Starting May 1,1998, a Special Diet allowance in the amount of $43.00 was issued for a period not exceeding 9 months. Issuance of these funds was intended to cover additional costs related to the increased nutritional requirements associated with pre and postnatal care.
The prenatal care period commenced with the 16th week of pregnancy and ended with the birth of the child. Postnatal care commenced with the birth of the child and continues until the 12th week after the birth of the child (Special Diet of $43.00 for a period of up to 9 months).
Effective November 2001, special diets for pregnancy and breast-feeding are approved items under the provincial Special Diet Schedule.
Any participant currently (as of November 2001) receiving the pre and post natal diet can continue with these amounts until it expires naturally (12th week after birth of the child). At that time, she is to be assessed for other approved diets based on medical verification.
All other persons are to assessed under the Special Diet Schedule.
