Project Background

In April 2019, the Yonge North Subway Extension was announced as part of the 2019 Provincial Budget. The project extends north from Finch Station to Richmond Hill. As many as six new stations were envisioned with two intermodal terminals before Metrolinx assumed responsibility for delivering the project. The project also includes a train storage and maintenance facility to accommodate subway vehicle storage requirements created by the extension. Once complete, this project will be operated by the TTC as a seamless extension of the existing TTC Line 1 Subway.

The project has been identified as the sole responsibility of Metrolinx per Ontario Regulation 248/19 Interim Measures – Upload of Rapid Transit Projects. Toronto City Council has passed several resolutions requiring that the Ontario Line be in-service prior to the in-service date of the Yonge North Subway Extension. According to the 2019 Provincial Budget, this project is planned to have an in-service date of 2029-2030, following the in-service date of the Ontario Line.
