The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) will extend Line 1 (Yonge-University) roughly 8 kilometres from Finch Station through to Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill.

The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) is an initiative under the Metrolinx-led Subway Program. The YNSE will extend Line 1 with five stations at Steeles, Bridge, High Tech, Clark, and Royal Orchard. The extension will connect to the Richmond Hill GO train and Highway 407 GO bus service, as well as local bus routes at every station. Metrolinx continues to undertake work to refine scope of the YNSE.

The YNSE project will be delivered through dedicated contracts for the Advance Tunnel portion of the project and for the Stations, Rail and Systems component of the project.

In March 2021, Metrolinx released an initial business case(IBC) for the project.

In April 2023, Metrolinx and IO issued the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the Advance Tunnel (AT) contract for delivery of 6.3 kilometres of tunneling works between Finch Station and Bridge Station. In December 2023, a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the contract to design and build the subway’s tunnels was issued and proponents shortlisted through the RFQ were invited to respond to the RFP with proposals to deliver the tunnelling project. The contract for the tunnelling project is expected to be awarded in late 2024. The RFQ for the Stations, Rails and Systems (SRS) contract is anticipated to be issued in 2025 and construction will commence after tunnelling.

Furthermore, the Finch Early Works contract, which includes upgrades at Finch Station to accommodate the subway extension, was awarded to Black and MacDonald Limited. The project work initiated in October 2022 and Metrolinx began construction in Spring 2023.

Metrolinx has held virtual in-person engagements events to provide the public with information on project benefits, route improvements, the property acquisition process, and other project details.
