Ward 20, Scarborough Southwest By-Election: Key Dates

Thursday, September 7

  • First day to file a nomination paper and 25 signed endorsements for Councillor, Scarborough-Southwest (Ward 20) by-election
    • Once the nomination paper is filed with the City Clerk, the candidate can start raising and spending money on their campaign
    • preliminary spending limit provided to candidates
  • First day to file a notice of registration as a third party advertiser
    • A third party advertiser cannot raise or spend money on their campaign, nor begin advertising, until their registration is certified by the City Clerk
    • Preliminary spending limit provided to third party advertiser upon certification

Monday, October 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

  • Deadline for candidates to:
    • File a nomination
    • Withdraw a nomination

Monday, October 23

  • Voters’ List, sample ballot, ward maps and list of voting locations will be available to candidates

Friday, October 27

  • Final spending limits provided to candidates and registered third party advertisers
  • Final self-contribution limit provided to candidates

Tuesday, October 31 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

  • Logic and accuracy testing of the vote counting equipment
  • Email candidateinfo@toronto.ca to book an appointment to observe

Wednesday, November 1

  • Number of scrutineers allowed in each voting place available through MyCampaign

Sunday, November 5

  • First day election signs and campaign office signs can be erected

Saturday, November 25 and Sunday, November 26 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Advance Vote
  • Candidates can access the list of people who voted during the advance vote period

Tuesday, November 28

  • Candidates can access the list of people who voted by mail-in ballot

Wednesday, November 29

  • Last day to register as a third party advertiser

Thursday, November 30

  • Election Day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday, December 3

  • Election signs and campaign office signs to be removed by the end of day

Monday, January 15

  • End of campaign period for candidates and third party advertisers
  • Last day to file a Notice of Extension, Form 6, to continue campaigning to erase a deficit

Monday, February 12

  • Deadline for candidates and third party advertisers to apply to the Superior Court of Justice for an extension of filing date

Tuesday, February 13 at 2 p.m.

  • Deadline for candidates and third party advertisers to file the initial financial statement

Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m.

  • Candidates and third party advertisers who did not file their financial statement by Thursday, February 13, 2024 may file it within the 30 days grace period if they pay a $500 late filing fee. Any candidates who file within the 30 day grace period is not entitled to receive their refund of nomination filing fee.

Monday, May 13

  • Last day for an eligible elector in the City of Toronto to file a compliance audit application on an initial financial statement

Monday, July 15

  • End of extended (supplementary) campaign period

Tuesday, August 13

  • Deadline for candidates and third party advertisers to apply to the Superior Court of Justice for an extension of filing date

Wednesday August 14 at 2 p.m.

  • Deadline for candidates and third party advertisers to file the supplementary financial statement (applies only to those who extended their campaign)

Friday, September 13 at 2 p.m.

  • Candidates and third party advertisers who did not file their financial statement by Wednesday, August 14, 2024 may file it within the 30 day grace period if they pay a $500 late filing fee.

Tuesday, November 12

  • Last day for an eligible elector in the City of Toronto to file a compliance audit application on a supplementary financial statement
  • Deadline for Toronto Elections to receive (either online or by mail) the contributor’s contribution rebate application
