The City is improving the playground in Carlton Park as part of an ongoing program to enhance playgrounds and play spaces across the city, so that everyone can experience the joys and benefits of play for years to come.

This project has been classified as a Consult project based on the International Association for Public Participation Spectrum. This means we collect and consider public feedback on proposed design options to inform the development of a final playground design.

July 2026
Online Survey
From June 8 to July 13, 2026, feedback on multiple playground design options was collected in an online survey. The survey was promoted through paid social media ads, on-site signage, outreach to nearby schools and local community groups, the local Councillor’s office, community word-of-mouth and on this page. The survey received 141 responses.
The design team will use this feedback to refine the final playground design. The final design will be available on this page in late Fall 2026.
Key Feedback Highlights
When asked to rank their preferred playground design, respondents ranked Playground Design C highest (38 per cent) followed by Playground Design A (32 per cent) and Playground Design B (30 per cent).
Respondents shared that the three most important features to include in the new playground are:
senior play structure for ages five to 12 (56 per cent)
climbing structures (44 per cent)
belt swings (37 per cent)
Respondents shared that the three least important features to include in the new playground are:
play panels (51 per cent)
stand-up spinner toys (43 per cent)
stand-alone toys such as seesaws, spinner seats and spring toys (26 per cent)
If budget permits, the three features that respondents would like more of in the improved playground are:
climbing structures (46 per cent)
senior play structure for ages five to 12 (34 per cent)
stand-alone toys such as seesaws, spinner seats and spring toys (27 per cent)
Respondents shared additional comments. Some common feedback and out-of-scope suggestions included:
more shade and trees
natural play elements
water features and sand play opportunities
additional seating for caregivers and families.
For seating around the playground:
79 per cent of respondents like benches
86 per cent of respondents like picnic tables.
The preferred colour scheme for the new playground was vibrant cool colours such as blue, turquoise and purple (26 per cent), over a mix of bright warm and vibrant cool colours (26 per cent) and earthy colours (23 per cent).

All three designs are AODA compliant, have the same amount of play features and cost the same amount.

About the Project
Carlton Park Playground is located along Edwin Avenue, south of the basketball court.
The playground currently includes:
two swing sets with:
four swings for ages two to five
eight swings for ages five and up
playground equipment for ages two to five
playground equipment for ages five to 12
one medium spiral slide
one large straight double slide
one small double slide
one small single slide
a seesaw
a spring toy
a carousel
sand under all play areas
armourstone seating area
The playground will be redesigned using community feedback and is proposed to include:
playground equipment for ages two to five
playground equipment for ages five to 12
engineered wood fibre surfacing
an accessible pathway to the playground area
The play equipment and pathway connecting to the playground area will comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Learn more about how playgrounds are made accessible.
Improvements will only be made in the general playground area and will not include any new water or lighting features or improvements to other areas of the park.
