The City is inviting residents to provide feedback on the recommended road safety improvements along Hendon Avenue, between Talbot Road and Greenview Avenue. These improvements would replace the previously recommended cul-de-sac, while addressing community concerns related to traffic volumes and road safety associated with the Beecroft Road extension.
While this consultation focuses on Hendon Avenue, there will be future opportunities to provide feedback on the Beecroft Road extension when the project is in the detailed design phase, expected in 2026.
Residents have raised concerns about traffic volumes and motor vehicle speeds in the neighbourhood associated with the future Beecroft Road extension.
The recommended changes to reduce motor vehicle speeds could include reducing the posted speed limit, installing speed humps and pedestrian safety improvements.
The posted speed limit could be lowered from 40 km/h to 30 km/h.
Lowering speed limits can help reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities caused by speeding. Evidence suggests that the proposed reductions are unlikely to significantly affect travel times.
Speed humps on Hendon Avenue, between Greenview Avenue/future Beecroft Road extension and Talbot Road, would discourage non-local traffic, reduce vehicular speeds and provide a safe pedestrian environment.
Speed humps are a very effective traffic calming measure that would reduce motor vehicle speeds and volumes. They have minimal impact for people cycling and City services such as snow clearing, waste removal and Fire and Paramedic services.
A pedestrian crossing, stop sign and curb extension at Eldora Avenue would improve safety and accessibility to Hendon Park and reduce motor vehicle speeds.
The pedestrian crossing and curb extension would narrow the roadway, increase visibility of people walking and require motor vehicles to slow down.
Public opinion, along with technical and policy considerations, will be used to inform staff recommendations and decisions made by City Council.
Complete the online feedback form before May 25. Contact us to request a printed copy of the form.
City staff have carried out the City Council-directed recommendation to study traffic calming measures along Hendon Avenue, and to prepare an addendum to the 1993 EA study.
Receive feedback on recommended road safety improvements.
Recommendations will be presented to NYCC for approval.
If approved by NYCC, the recommendations would be filed with the Province’s Ministry of Environment through an Addendum to the 1993 EA study.
If approved by NYCC, Detailed Design is expected to begin in late 2026.
If approved by NYCC, recommendations would be implemented as part of the Beecroft Road extension work and construction could begin as early as 2028.
In 1993, City Council approved the Uptown Service Road and Associated Road Network Environmental Assessment (EA) study. This study recommended extending Beecroft Road from Finch Avenue West to Drewry Avenue, via Greenview Avenue. The City is now in the early stages of designing this planned extension.
Alongside the extension, the study recommended closing Hendon Avenue west of Greenview Avenue with a cul-de-sac. However, due to area development, public feedback and evolving transportation needs, the City now recommends keeping Hendon Avenue open as a through street, as it exists today.
In 2021, City Council adopted the recommendation to maintain Hendon Avenue as a through street to Yonge Street. City staff were directed to study traffic calming measures along Hendon Avenue and prepare an addendum to the 1993 EA study.
