Avoid Costly Charges

Contact Toronto Public Health before your construction or renovation begins to minimize concerns or changes.  It can be costly to make changes after you have completed or even started your construction.

Detailed plans are required by Toronto Building. Your plan will be reviewed for compliance with various regulations including the Ontario Building Code.

Prior to construction, submit a copy of your plan to Toronto Public Health. Your plan will be reviewed to ensure it is in compliance with the Ontario Food Premises Regulation. Your plans should include the location of:

  • all kitchen equipment (e.g. refrigerators, stoves, exhaust canopies, etc.)
  • utensil washing sinks and dishwashers
  • handwash basins
  • food storage areas
  • waste storage areas
  • staff change rooms or washrooms

Please review Structural Requirements for more information.

To submit electronic plans for food establishments:

  • Email DineSafe@toronto.ca or
  • Call Toronto Health Connections at 416-338-7600 and request to speak with a Public Health Inspector.

After your plans have been reviewed and construction is complete, your premises will be inspected prior to opening. A Toronto Public Health Inspector will work with you to  arrange a date.
