When children play games they are learning fundamental movement and physical activity skills that will allow them to move confidently and with control in a wide variety of sports. Children need to feel confident in running, throwing, kicking and catching in order to master skills needed to participate in sports such as soccer, baseball, hockey and swimming.

There are 46 games in five categories for children 6-12 years. Directions are provided for each game that includes the number of players, suggested ages, equipment needed and how to adapt the game for different skill levels and abilities.

Go Play Ball

There are 10 games in this category. Children will learn locomotion, travelling and manipulation skills by running, catching, throwing and kicking. When choosing a ball, consider the age of the child. A large soft ball is easier to catch than a small firm ball.

Go Play Group Games

There are 13 games in this category. Children will learn locomotion, travelling, manipulation and stability skills by running, volleying, balancing, stretching and collecting items. Children will also learn inter-personal skills such as decision making and problem solving.

Go Play Hopscotch

There are 8 games in this category. Children will learn locomotion, travelling, manipulation and stability skills by jumping, hopping, throwing, balancing, bending, twisting and turning.

Go Play Rope Games

There are 8 games in this category. Children will learn locomotion, travelling, manipulation and stability skills by hopping, jumping, striking, balancing, twisting and turning. Encourage children to keep their knees slightly bent as they jump.

Go Play Tag

There are 7 games in this category. Children will learn locomotion, travelling, manipulation and stability skills by running, catching, twisting and turning.
