Description of Service / Summary

Toronto Water responds to water meter leaks and related service requests. Due to extreme temperatures, service response may be delayed up to 72 hours. Homeowners are responsible for leaks in their own pipes or valves, and may be charged for damaged, stolen, or frozen meters. Water bills may also be affected by high usage or meter issues.

Reporting a Water Meter Leak

  • Contact the Toronto Water Meter Office during regular business hours.
  • After hours, call 311 to submit a service request.
  • You must be onsite when Toronto Water attends your property.

Important: Make sure the leak is from the water meter and not from a shut-off valve or pipes, which are the homeowner’s responsibility to repair.

Water Meter Location

Water meters are commonly located in the following areas:

  • Basement, along the front wall and near the floor
  • Basement washrooms
  • Laundry rooms
  • Furnace rooms

Fees for Damaged or Stolen Meters

Homeowners are responsible for protecting the water meter. Fees may apply if a meter is:

  • Damaged
  • Frozen
  • Stolen

Note: For leaky meters, Toronto Water will investigate. Charges are applied only if damage is determined to be the homeowner’s responsibility. Fees vary by meter size and are set annually by Council.
