Authorized Agents

The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) prevents any City of Toronto Tax & Utility customer service representative from releasing property tax or utility account details to anyone other than the registered property owner or an authorized agent of the owner.

An agent may be authorized to receive the bill for a property tax or utility account and/or access property tax or utility account information upon receipt of a letter of authorization signed by the property owner. An authorized agent may include:
  • Property manager, accountant or lawyer
  • Family member or friend
  • Designate (as assigned through completing a Designate Mailer Request for the utility bill)

Lawyers

Lawyers can obtain property tax and/or utility account information through the request of a Tax & Utility Clearance Certificate . A certificate will provide property tax and utility account status as well as allow the requester to obtain verbal updates for up to 6 months from the date the certificate is issued.

Mortgage Companies

If taxes are paid by your mortgage company and you have received a regular tax bill or tax statement of account, promptly forward the bill/statement to their office.

Your mortgage company can arrange to have their interest added to your property tax account by sending an email to mortgage@toronto.ca.  Once processed, property tax billing information will be sent to the mortgagor.

Annually, you will receive a Final Property Tax Bill displaying your mortgagor's name on the bill for your records.
