The City of Toronto offers several convenient ways to pay your property taxes. You can choose the method that works best for you, including online banking, pre-authorized payments, mail, in person, or through your mortgage company. Below is a clear summary of each option, along with important details to help ensure your payment is processed smoothly and on time.

Ways to Pay Your Property Taxes

Financial Institutions

You can pay your property taxes at your bank branch or through your financial institution’s secure website.

What you need to know:

  • Use your 21-digit assessment roll number from your property tax bill or statement.
  • It may take 3–5 business days for the City to receive and process your payment.
  • Ensure the correct payee information is selected in your banking profile.

Pre-Authorized Tax Payment Program

Enroll in the Pre-Authorized Tax Payment Program to have your property tax payments automatically deducted from your bank account.

Benefits:

  • Convenient and worry-free payments
  • Helps avoid missed deadlines
  • Payments are made directly to the City on your behalf

Pay by Mail

Post-dated cheques are accepted for upcoming due dates.

Accepted methods:

  • Debit
  • Cheque

Please note: Credit cards are not accepted for property tax payments.

Mortgage Company Payments

If your mortgage company pays your property taxes:

  • Forward any property tax bills or statements you receive to your mortgage company promptly.
  • If arranging new payments through your mortgage company, they can request to have their interest added to your property tax account by emailing mortgage updates.
  • Once processed, property tax billing information will be sent to the mortgagor.
  • You will still receive a Final Property Tax Bill issued in May for your records.

Recently Bought, Sold or Moved?

Update Your Payment Profile

If you have recently purchased, sold, or moved properties, follow these steps before making your first payment:

Confirm Your Bill Information

  • Ensure your first property tax bill, account statement, and/or utility bill is in your name.

Locate Your Account Details

  • Find the 21-digit assessment roll number on your property tax notice.
  • Locate your 20-digit utility account number and client number if applicable.

Update Your Online Banking

  • Sign in to your online banking profile.
  • Select the correct payee (City of Toronto Property Tax/City of Toronto Utility Bill – or similar variation).
  • Enter your new assessment roll number and/or utility account details.
  • Remove outdated payee information to prevent payment errors.

Completing these steps helps ensure your payment is applied to the correct property.

Paying with Foreign Currency

U.S. Cash

U.S. cash is not accepted in person at Inquiry & Payment Counters. Staff cannot process foreign currency or exchange rates.

U.S. Cheques

U.S. cheques may be accepted in person.

Important details:

  • Payments are processed through the City’s bank using the current exchange rate.
  • Posting to your property tax account may take several days.
  • Allow at least three weeks for processing before your tax instalment due date.

Cryptocurrency Payments

Payment with cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin) is not accepted for property tax payments.

Supplementary or Omitted Tax Bills

Supplementary/Omitted Tax Bills cannot be paid through:

  • The Pre-Authorized Tax Payment Program
  • A mortgage company

You must pay these bills using another accepted payment method or forward the bill to your mortgage company for payment.

Misapplied Tax Payments

If your payment is not reflected on your property tax account, take these steps:

Step 1: Contact Your Bank

Confirm the payment was applied to the correct assessment roll number.

Step 2: Contact Revenue Services

Speak with a Revenue Services customer service representative for further assistance.

Step 3: Provide Proof of Payment

You may need to provide proof of payment and, if ownership changed during the same year, a copy of your Statement of Adjustments.

Proof of Payment

Acceptable proof includes:

  • Cancelled cheque
  • Bank statement showing the payment
  • Online payment confirmation
  • Cashier’s paid stamp on a bill/statement from an Inquiry & Payment Counter
  • Receipt for debit payment made at an Inquiry & Payment Counter

Note: A printout of payment history from the Property Tax Lookup is not accepted as proof of payment.

Refunding or Transferring a Misapplied Payment

Please note that transferring a misapplied payment may result in a Payment Redistribution Fee being applied to your property tax account.
