Today, Mayor Olivia Chow served up the first ball to officially open play at the City of Toronto’s new purpose-built pickleball courts at Main Sewage Treatment Playground, one of the City’s largest dedicated pickleball facilities.
The new 25,000-square-foot facility responds to the rapid growth of pickleball and increasing demand for dedicated, accessible outdoor recreation spaces. It features wheelchair-accessible courts, a new shade structure and bleacher seating with accessible benches, improved fencing and entry gates, and colour-coated court surfaces designed to enhance play.
Main Sewage Treatment Playground is an 11.2-hectare park at Eastern Avenue and Coxwell Avenue that features 11 dedicated pickleball courts, two basketball courts, a diamond and the Tubs & Gee Gage Rugby field. It opens daily for public drop-in and passive use.
Citywide pickleball and tennis court upgrades
Toronto now offers more than 300 individual public pickleball courts across 108 outdoor summer locations, with an additional 49 indoor locations providing drop-in play.
The City’s Parks and Recreation Facilities Plan calls for expanding access to high-quality pickleball infrastructure and this new complex represents a $1.05 million investment through the Mayor’s Back on Track program, which is revitalizing recreational infrastructure across Toronto to support healthier, more active neighbourhoods, 57 rehabilitated tennis courts, helping expand access to recreational opportunities and meet growing demand for pickleball across the city.
Before visiting, individuals and families are encouraged to check programming schedules on the City’s Parks & Recreation Facility Listings webpage.
Quotes:
“Recreation spaces are where neighbours come together, stay active and build stronger communities. Through my Back on Track program, we are investing in parks and facilities across Toronto to create more accessible opportunities for people of all ages to play, connect and enjoy the outdoors. These new pickleball courts are a great example of how we are making it easier for residents to stay healthy and active without barriers.”
— Mayor Olivia Chow
“Great news! Some of the city’s first purpose-built pickleball courts have opened here in Toronto-Danforth. I’m glad to see residents and various community pickleball groups booking these beautiful brand-new pickleball courts in our community, built thanks to funding allocated by Mayor Chow in her 2026 Budget. I’m very happy to have worked over several years to create more local and affordable opportunities to play this fun, growing sport.”
— Paula Fletcher, Councillor (Toronto-Danforth)
