Members of the media and the public are invited to attend a special celebration as the City of Toronto plants the Sugar Maple, Toronto’s first-ever Tree of the Year, chosen by children and youth as part of Kids Vote Weekend during the 2026 municipal election.

Date: Tuesday, November 3

Time: 10 a.m.

Location: Elm Park, 230 Gosford Blvd.

Note: Event will be cancelled if there is high chance of thunderstorm or other hazardous weather.

The Sugar Maple was chosen as Toronto’s 2027 Tree of the Year after more than 10,000 ballots were cast during Kids Vote Weekend, a program that helps grow future voters, educate children about local democracy and provide early exposure to key elements of the voting process. The initiative also supports the City’s goal of expanding Toronto’s urban forest and achieving a 40 per cent tree canopy by 2050.

More information on the Tree of the Year can be found on the City’s webpage: www.toronto.ca/tree-of-the-year.
