Today, Mayor Olivia Chow and Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop welcomed new front-line staff, including Operations Firefighters and Fire Inspectors, during a graduation ceremony held at the Toronto Fire and Paramedic Services Training Centre.
Operations Firefighters respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous materials incidents and other emergencies across Toronto every day. The Operations Recruits have completed an intensive 19-week training program and earned National Fire Protection Association professional qualifications as Operations Firefighters.
Fire Prevention Inspectors conduct fire safety inspections, address violations and enforce the Ontario Fire Code (OFC) in accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, associated regulations, and Ontario Fire Marshal directives. Enforcement of the OFC is fundamental to effective fire prevention and plays a critical role in reducing fire-related injuries, deaths, and property damage in Toronto.
The Fire Inspector Recruits will join Toronto Fire Services’ (TFS) Community Risk Reduction Division, bringing NFPA professional qualifications as Fire Inspectors and Fire and Life Safety Educators.
TFS is the largest fire service in Canada, providing Toronto residents, visitors and businesses with a suite of world-class fire protection services that includes public education, fire prevention, Ontario Fire Code enforcement and an all-hazards emergency response.
Toronto is the largest city in North America with an internationally accredited fire service under the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.
