Toronto Elections is pleased to announce that more than 10,000 ballots were cast for Toronto’s 2027 Tree of the Year during Kids Vote Weekend.

The kids of Toronto have chosen the Sugar Maple as Toronto’s 2027 Tree of the Year, with 4,549 votes.

Known for its vibrant red, orange and yellow fall colours, the Sugar Maple is native to Toronto and plays an important role in the city’s urban forest. Its large canopy provides shade, helps cool neighbourhoods, supports local wildlife and contributes to cleaner air and healthier communities.

Kids Vote Weekend voting took place on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 at 50 advance voting places. Kids were able to choose from five tree candidates: Basswood, Paper Birch, Red Oak, Sugar Maple and White Pine.

Kids Vote Weekend is a program to help grow future voters, educate children about local democracy, and provide early exposure to key elements of the voting process.

An official breakdown of voting results is available on the Kids Vote Weekend webpage.
