The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) regulates the sale, service, and delivery of liquor in Ontario. As part of their regulatory role, the AGCO is authorized to extend the hours of sale of alcohol at a licenced premise, and to issue a Special Occasion Permit (SOP) for the sale or service of alcohol at public events held by non-licence holders/in non-licenced venues or spaces, during specific events.
The AGCO requires applicants requesting extended hours or SOPs, as part of their application, to include a letter from the City endorsing the event as municipally significant. Applications for extensions and SOPs approved by the AGCO are listed on the AGCO’s website.
Permanent liquor licence holders may also apply to the City for a temporary extension of their permitted outdoor space, such as an outdoor restaurant patio. The City of Toronto is the approver of temporary outdoor space extensions.
The City of Toronto maintains a record of all applications for endorsement of events as municipally significant for the purposes of requesting extended hours and SOPs, as well as temporary outdoor space extensions approved by the City. Only applications that received a letter of endorsement are available at this time.
