An integrated bus/bike platform is shown in a bike lane on Lawrence Ave E, with a sign reminding people cycling to not pass open doors to the right of the platform. The City of Toronto installed bike lanes on Lawrence Avenue East between Port Union Road and East Avenue in 2019. This project was bundled with road resurfacing and upgraded the former signed cycling route to bike lanes to provide improved cycling connections and safety.

In 2023, the City of Toronto installed bike lanes, sidewalk, accessibility and transit improvements as part of a road resurfacing project on Lawrence Avenue East between East Avenue and Rouge Hill Drive.

The Lawrence Avenue bike lane project was approved by the Infrastructure and Environment Committee in June 2019 and City Council in July 2019.

Project Background

Lawrence Avenue East between Port Union Road to East Drive and East Drive to Rouge Hill Drive was in poor condition and was programmed for road resurfacing in 2019 and 2022, respectively. The planned resurfacing provided an opportunity to review Lawrence Avenue East for safety improvements including new or improved pedestrian crossings, improved sidewalks, and new or improved bikeways.

Consultation

In April 2019, the City of Toronto hosted online and in-person public consultation. Attendees had an opportunity to view and provide feedback on the draft designs for the proposed roadway changes which included bike lanes.

Project Recommendations

Bicycle lanes were proposed and approved on Lawrence Avenue East from Port Union Road to Rouge Hills Drive to make it easier for residents and visitors to access key destinations such as the Rouge National Urban Park, Waterfront Trail and Rouge Hill GO Station. The west limit of the proposed bicycle lanes would connect directly to the future planned bicycle lanes on Port Union Road, north of Lawrence Avenue East and the existing signed bike route, south of Lawrence Avenue East.
