The Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE) will extend Line 1 (Yonge-University) roughly 8 kilometres from Finch Station through to Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill.

The Yonge North Subway Extension will bring Line 1 north from Finch Station into York Region, adding approximately eight kilometres of new subway service with stations at Steeles, Clark, Royal Orchard, Bridge, and High Tech.

The extension will make it faster and easier for people to travel between Toronto and York Region by connecting with the Richmond Hill GO train line, regional GO and Viva bus services, and local York Region Transit and TTC bus routes.

The project is being delivered through two major contracts: one contract for tunnelling and another for the stations, track, and support systems. Tunnelling will be delivered by the North End Connectors consortium, and procurement for the stations, rail and systems contract is underway.

Metrolinx is moving forward with detailed design and community engagement for the project, building on the Initial Business Case shared in 2021.

Following a competitive process, the North End Connectors consortium was awarded the contract in 2025 to design and build 6.3 kilometres of twin tunnels between Finch Station and just south of the future Bridge Station.

Procurement is underway for the other major package of work for the project — the stations, rail and systems contract — which includes design and construction of stations, tracks, and support systems. The request for qualifications for this package was issued in 2025.

Earlier upgrades at Finch Station, completed by Black & McDonald Limited, have helped prepare the station for future tunnelling work.

Metrolinx continues to host engagement events to share construction updates, answer questions, and gather feedback from communities as the Yonge North Subway Extension moves forward.
