The Green Will Initiative invites Toronto building portfolio owners to partner with the City to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from buildings, which are the largest source of GHG emissions in Toronto.

The Initiative

To date, the Green Will Initiative (GWI) has brought together 30 of Toronto’s major building portfolio owners who are committed to leading the way and taking bold action to reduce their buildings’ emissions to net-zero.

In October 2019, City Council declared a climate emergency and adopted a stronger emissions reduction target for Toronto: net zero by 2050 or sooner. In light of the Climate Emergency Declaration, the City announced GWI which reflects Toronto’s commitment to accelerate greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the building sector. Later in October, the City also announced the Initiative on the international stage at the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark.

How It Works

Through the GWI, building owners will be supported in their efforts to reduce their building’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. Recognizing that the path to net zero will be unique for each portfolio and building. City staff will support building owners in achieving targets and creating a plan to accelerate emissions reductions.

  • Build a Pathway to Net Zero: Members will receive support to prioritize net zero planning and implementation, including access to the City’s Strategic Carbon Management (SCM) workshops and expert training from Canadian Institute for Energy Training (CIET).
  • Be Recognized: The City will showcase and recognize members’ accomplishments and best practices. Members will be featured on the GWI webpage and other City of Toronto channels.
  • Receive Peer Learning: The GWI provides a forum for collaboration and shared learning between members to achieve mutually beneficial goals.
